This year the Welfare department of the MSA is hoping to raise funds to sponsor additional Asylum Seeker Scholarships. Commonwealth supported places at University are limited to those who are Australian citizens. This means that more often than not refugees and asylum seekers have effectively no means to access a tertiary education. Though Scholarships are sponsored by the University as well as Monash Alumni many Asylum Seekers still miss out.

With the Melbourne Marathon 5.7 km coming up we thought it could be a great catalyst to try and raise the funds. Students who are interested in participating would seek out sponsorship from family and friends prior to attempting and hopefully completing the run. These funds would then be put towards additional scholarships. There is an entry fee of around $40 per person, however Monash has kindly agreed to pay this on behalf of the students meaning that participation is 100% free. The marathon will be held on October 15th, 2017.
