A Forum on Refugees and Asylum Seekers
Thursday, 30th August 2018, 5pm
H2, Menzies Building
The conversation surrounding refugees and asylum seekers is often full of more rhetoric than fact. As part of MSA’s diversity and inclusion week, join us to address and respond to misconceptions around refugees and asylum seekers, to talk about the realities of Australian policies in the global context, including our aid policies.
Some 1600 people remain on Manus Island and Nauru detention centres. July marked five years since Australia significantly tightened their border policy, claiming that those arriving by boat have no chance of being settled in Australia. Since 2013, 12 Asylum Seekers have died on Manus Island and Nauru. Australia has faced criticism from the local and international community, the UN, and many NGOs for their policies, under both sides of government.
We are honored to have such amazing speakers at our forum, which includes:
- Tim Costello, CEO of World Vision,
- Claire O’Neil, Labor Member for Hotham,
- Simon Capp, Presenter from ASRC
- Yusra Hassan, Youth Intern from CMY
- And others!
We will be taking questions from the floor so make sure you register and come prepared.
