“Nowt more outcastin’, nowt more outcastin’!”
On the brink of World War II, two young men happen upon an isolated tribe dwelling in the Tasmanian wilderness. Despite intentions of cultural preservation, the tribe is stripped of their long-held autonomy and secluded away in a mental asylum, inevitably leading to tragic consequences. The Golden Age, written by acclaimed Australian playwright, Louis Nowra, is a poignant portrayal of the contest between civilisation and barbarity.
Inspired by a true story, The Golden Age uses a mixture of historical fact, Australian folklore and poetic imagery to create a post-colonial myth that allows us to interrogate the complexities and complications of a modern culture built upon colonial values.
